Typical food in the Andes |
Ajiaco - this delicious soup dish comes from the capital Bogota and fuses corn, shredded chicken, potatoes, cream and capers.
Bandeja Paisa - Medellin's favorite dish contains a mammoth quantity of food including pork belly, rice, avocado, beans, sausage, and black pudding. Fiambre - containing similar ingredients to the Bandeja Paisa, a fiambre is for those conscious foodies as it is wrapped in a banana leaf. Arepas - this cornbread can be found all over the country and ranges from flat fried cornbread to flame-grilled bite-sized arepas in the region of Boyaca. Calentao - long trekking days calls for a hearty breakfast and this combination of beans, rice, eggs, beef and avocado fits the bill perfectly. |
Frequently asked questions
What is the best tour operator? There are plenty of great operators offering trips in Colombia. Like Kagumu Adventures, travel operators should be legally registered in Colombia, have plenty of years experience and they should be transparent in their approach to responsible travel. You can read Kagumu's social and environmental commitment by clicking here.
Is it safe to hike in Colombia?Yes. Colombia is safe to enjoy a trekking trip but it is highly advisable to go with a reputable local operator. Not only will a local operator know the best times of year to go and safe trails to use but they will also be in contact with emergency services in case of a serious accident. A good operator should also have a full risk assessment and all their guides should be fully first-aid trained.
Do I need a visa?Yes, but you will receive a travel visa when you arrive at the airport which will cover your stay in Colombia.
When is the best time of year to go?Colombia has a multitude of climates so check where you want to go first and then the best time of year for the climate you desire. As a general rule, dryer seasons last from December to March and from June to August. It is best to visit El Cocuy and Lost Nevados National Park from January through March.
What will the accommodation be like?Accommodation varies depends on which itinerary you choose. During the Lost City trek you will stay in jungle camps in hammocks or bunk beds while in Los Nevados you will stay with traditional farmers. During the non-trekking days you will stay in beautiful boutique hotels in stunning Spanish colonial towns. Single rooms are available upon request and at an extra cost and subject to availability.
|
Are the hikes good for vegans and vegetarians? Our local leaders and guides will take care of all food requirements throughout your trip. You will be surprised what we can organize for you while in the middle of the jungle or at the base of a snow-peaked volcano!
What is the level of trekking? The level varies depending on which itinerary you choose. Generally we don't require any previous hiking or trekking experience but we recommend these trips for people in good shape.
Do I need to speak Spanish? Not really. You will be able to get around with English (just about). In fact, only 4.2% of the country speaks English. However, to really endear yourself to locals try to learn a few phrases before you arrive.
Will I need to carry my own bags? You will be able to leave your large luggage in the hotel while you are trekking. On the hut to hut treks you will carry a small backpack while other items can be transported ahead. For the Lost City trek, you will carry your small backpack for the entire four days but there will be ways of minimizing the strain as detailed in this guide to the Lost City by our lead guide.
